Why this exists

For thirty years, the metadata inside image, video, and audio files lived in the dark. Cameras wrote GPS coordinates next to every photo, AI tools started signing their exports with cryptographic provenance manifests, and platforms quietly began reading both — using them to decide what your post is, who sees it, and how it's labeled. Almost nobody opens a file to check what's in there. Even fewer people knew it mattered.

Metadata Cleaner started as a tool I built for myself: a fast, in-browser way to strip the invisible layer off a file before posting it. It grew into the product on this site because the people I shared it with kept asking for it, and because the second wave of metadata — C2PA "content credentials" embedded by Suno, Midjourney, Runway, ElevenLabs, Photoshop AI — made the problem urgent for creators, not just privacy people.

The whole product runs in your browser. There is no upload step. Nothing about your file is ever transmitted to a server. When you close the tab, every trace of what you cleaned is gone.

Who's behind it

Andre Thomas (Dre) is the founder of Boost My Biz Ai, the company that operates Metadata Cleaner. He builds privacy and creator tools from a one-person studio. Background spans product engineering, AI tooling, and digital marketing — which is how he ended up sitting at the exact intersection of "creators using AI" and "platforms quietly down-ranking AI exports," and decided to do something about it.

Threat model

Metadata Cleaner is designed to address a specific, narrow set of risks:

• Identity leak from EXIF/GPS: your phone embeds your exact coordinates, device serial, and capture timestamp in every photo. Stripping that closes the leak.
• AI content downranking from C2PA: platforms read embedded provenance manifests at upload time. Removing them removes one of the two main signals (the other — distributor-declared AI flags via DDEX — is upstream and outside what any file-side tool can change).
• Workflow disclosure for professionals: photographers, agencies, and stock contributors don't want their gear, lens serial, AI-tool usage, and edit history shipping with every deliverable.

What Metadata Cleaner does not protect against, and we say so openly: inaudible audio watermarks baked into the waveform by tools like Suno or ElevenLabs (those are not metadata), platform-side acoustic or visual fingerprinting (the audio/pixels themselves are unchanged), or human review of obvious AI generation. We are transparent about the line.

Verify it yourself

The single most important thing we claim is that your files never leave your device. You don't have to trust us — you can verify it in 30 seconds with the browser tools already on your computer.

That's the entire proof. The only network calls we ever make are to /api/subscribe if you explicitly enter an email (we no longer ask for one on the free tier) and to buy.stripe.com if you click Subscribe. Your file content never goes through either.

The build history, briefly

• April 2026 — Web app launched with image, video, and audio support.
• April 2026 — Chrome extension v1.0 published. Right-click any image, strip on download.
• May 2026 — Added M4A/AAC support, redesigned for AI creators, switched off the third-party blog stack and self-hosted everything.
• Ongoing — Adding format coverage and creator-tool-specific guides as the C2PA spec and platform policies evolve.
