You spent weeks on a track. The lyrics are yours. The performance is yours. The melody you hummed into Suno's prompt box was the one that wouldn't leave you alone for a month. You finished it, mastered it, sent it to your distributor, and waited.
And nothing happened.
Not the kind of "nothing" where your friends listened once and your stream count peaked at 47. The kind where the streams plateau at a number that doesn't match the work, and Discover Weekly never mentions you, and TikTok's algorithm seems to know your video exists but never shows it to anyone, and you start to wonder if the platforms are actively burying you — and you can't tell whether it's bad music or bad luck or something else.
The something else is the something I want to talk about. There's a real, mechanical reason AI-assisted music gets less reach. It's not the algorithm being mysterious. It's two specific signals the platforms read before any human (or any algorithm) decides whether your music is good. This is what they are, what you can do about each, and what you can't.
"My Music Is Good. Why Is Nobody Hearing It?" — It's Not Just the Algorithm.
The temptation when reach dies is to blame the algorithm. To say the algorithm hates AI music, or the algorithm is rigged against independents, or the algorithm only promotes major-label artists.
The algorithm is doing something more specific than that. The algorithm is making decisions based on signals that arrive at the platform before the algorithm runs. By the time the recommendation engine considers your track, the track already has a label attached to it. The label was applied automatically, at upload, based on what the file said about itself and what your distributor said about it. Once that label is on, the algorithm's behavior is downstream of it — different recommendation weighting, different playlist eligibility, different exposure ceiling.
This is not paranoia. It's not even controversial. Spotify, Apple Music, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube have all publicly stated they apply AI-disclosure labels and that those labels affect distribution. The mechanics of how they apply the labels — that part is less publicized, and it's where the leverage is.

The Two Signals Platforms Use to ID AI Content
There are two independent signals.
Signal one — the file. The audio file you upload contains a metadata block. Inside that block, your AI tool (Suno, Udio, ElevenLabs, Riffusion) has written a cryptographically signed C2PA assertion that names the tool, the model version, and the date of generation. Standard ID3 tags also carry the encoder name. The whole thing is read at ingest by the platform's pipeline.
Signal two — the distributor's DDEX feed. When DistroKid, CD Baby, Tunecore, AWAL, EMPIRE, or whoever your distributor is uploads your track to Spotify, it sends a parallel database feed in DDEX format. That feed has fields for AI disclosure. If you checked "this track contains AI-generated content" at the distributor's upload form, that flag travels with the track to every DSP your distributor delivers to.
These two signals are independent. They live in different systems. They get read at different points in the pipeline. The platform reads both and either one alone is enough to apply the AI label.
This is the fact most creators miss. They strip the file, leave the distributor checkbox checked, and wonder why nothing changed. The distributor signal alone tripped the label.
The File Signal: What's in Your Export and How Platforms Read It

You'll see:
- A C2PA manifest naming Suno (or Udio, ElevenLabs, Riffusion — whichever tool)
- An encoder field announcing the AI tool and version
- A generation timestamp
- Sometimes the prompt itself
- Album artwork that carries its own metadata layer
This is the file signal. It's the strongest of the two — cryptographically signed, hard to fake, easy for any platform to verify. (Detail on what each tool embeds. Detail on C2PA in audio specifically.)

The Distributor Signal: The Declaration That Lives Outside the File
The distributor signal is harder to talk about because it's less technical and more about choices.
Most distributor upload forms now have an AI disclosure checkbox. Some are explicit ("does this track contain AI-generated content?"). Some are buried in a form titled something like "Track Disclosures." Some require you to agree to a TOS that requires honest disclosure of AI use as a condition of using the service.
The decision about whether to check the box is not a technical one. It's a contractual and ethical one. If your distributor's TOS requires honest disclosure, checking the box is the right call. If you check it, the platform will apply the AI label regardless of how clean your file is — and that's the deal you signed up for.
If your distributor's TOS doesn't explicitly require disclosure (some don't, especially for "AI-assisted" rather than "AI-generated" cases), the choice is yours.
This guide is not telling you to lie to your distributor. It is telling you that the distributor flag and the file metadata are independent, that closing one without the other doesn't help, and that the right strategy depends on what you're trying to accomplish and what you signed.

What You Can Control Right Now
Three things.

2. Check your distributor's disclosure form. Read the question they're asking. Read their TOS. Decide what's right for you given what you signed up for.
3. Don't tag #suno on every release. Platform classifiers are increasingly trained on social signal — if your account history correlates strongly with AI tool brand mentions, the supervised models start applying labels probabilistically based on account-level signals, not just per-track signals. Build a separate creative identity if you need to.
What You Can't Control (Honest)
Three things, and none of them are in this product's reach.
1. Audio watermarks. Some Suno model versions and some ElevenLabs voice exports embed a near-inaudible watermark in the audio itself. That's not metadata. Stripping the file does not remove it. Removing it requires a re-encode through a DAW — a separate workflow, separate tools, separate skill ceiling. If your reach problem persists after stripping the file and unchecking the distributor box, the watermark is the most likely remaining cause.
2. Audio classifiers. Spotify and the major DSPs all run uploads through ML models trained to detect AI generation from spectral patterns. They're imperfect. False negatives happen. False positives also happen — fully human-recorded music sometimes gets flagged. Stripping the metadata removes the easy answer; it doesn't remove the question entirely from the classifier's view.
3. Account-level history. If you've previously uploaded labeled AI content from the same account, the platform has correlated that. New uploads inherit some of that history. Whether new clean uploads "outrun" old labeled history is one of those things the platforms don't publicly explain, and which seems to vary by platform and by ramp.
The honest framing: stripping the metadata closes one signal of three. It's the most reliable signal and the one with the clearest fix. Closing it is meaningful. It's not a guarantee.
The Workflow: Clean Before You Upload

- Generate the track. Suno, Udio, ElevenLabs, your DAW pipeline — whatever you use.

- If watermarks are a known issue with your model version — and you can hear them in a high-resolution spectrogram, or you've identified them previously — run the cleaned audio through a transparent compression pass in your DAW.
- Upload to your distributor. Read their AI disclosure question. Decide based on your TOS and your ethics. Whatever you do at this step, it's a separate decision from the file strip.
- Don't lean into "AI artist" branding if your goal is to escape AI-content reach throttling. The brand and the reach are at odds. Make the choice consciously.
This is a workflow. It's not a magic fix. The reach problem is real, the mechanism is mechanical, and the leverage available to you is limited but specific. Use what you have. Be honest about what you don't.
